The one bonus piece of advice I would offer is to simply be realistic. This is a huge time commitment. At any point, if you waver and quit, you'll have wasted all of your effort and have nothing to show for it. Give yourself a 3 day window to get a batch cooked and canned. See if you like the end result. If so, fantastic! You have done something fun and unusual and will likely have memories for a lifetime. If after 3 days you are wondering why in the world would anyone ever make their own maple syrup? You will be able to move on in life, happy in the knowledge that syrup is readily available at the supermarket and that cold winter days are better left to Jack Frost and polar bears. Plus, you still get to keep the memories.
