That appears to be changing as Winter has officially arrived (despite Mayan prophesies) and the mercury has dropped to the teens. Finding cracked eggs is a telltale sign. Cold weather brings many challenges for the outside creatures but they are very adaptable and with the right assistance, they survive, and even thrive!
Here are some of the steps we take to protect our outside friends:
In the fall we moved all of the chickens and ducks closer to the house to give them better shelter from the wind and to allow us to monitor them more frequently. This also makes it easier to run power to the coops for water heaters, etc.
enough space to roost or burrow in the straw, but not too large for heat loss, helps them stay toasty during the cold months.
