It's complicated. Yes, we successfully raised our own pork this year, which led to some of the most beautiful and tasty bacon, chops and ham we have ever eaten. I've made some delicious soups that have warmed our bellies during the colder temps this fall and winter. Ham and white bean is our favorite so far.
Yes. A couple years ago when we took our first steps down this path by raising and butchering our own poultry, we were shaky. We were on-board with the concept, but a little queasy about the process. We still are. Every time we go out to process some of our meat birds we have to do a gut check. It's not easy. We don't enjoy it. But we are committed to see it through. Why?
We eat meat. Therefore, it has become our mission to eat the best, healthiest, meat possible. Raising our own is a challenge, but having control over the process is very rewarding. We are able to choose to feed our animals the best organic feed available. No GMO's. They are treated humanely and we actively look after their welfare every day, year 'round, season after season. When it is time to eat a meal prepared with meat from our farm, we feel grateful and blessed. Completely different experience than when I used to prepare meat purchased from the grocery store. Not only is the meat better, MUCH better, but it's also healthier and that is why we do this.
If you are considering raising your own meat, I'd say, go for it! It's a lot of work, but it's worth it. I'd also caution you: be prepared for some mixed emotions that never really go away. You'll learn more about yourself than you knew before. You might feel nervous. You might hesitate. But if you ultimately see it through, you might even feel a little pride. Proud that you are one less consumer supporting commercial feed-lots. Proud that you are giving Monsanto and other GMO factories a wake up call. Proud that you are feeding your family the healthiest food possible. It's not just a step in the right direction, it's our past and our future. We can't just expect everyone else to fix what's wrong with our food supply. It starts at home. Be the change you want to see. Make it happen. Walk the walk.
